Winter Guide

What to Pack for your Winter Vacation

Stay warm, safe, and comfortable while exploring the snowy beauty of the Great Smoky Mountains.

When it comes to your winter vacation in Cades Cove, preparation is key. The valley transforms into a breathtaking, frost-covered wonderland, but the mountain weather can change rapidly. Here is our essential packing list to ensure you have the best trip possible.

Winter in Cades Cove

1. The Right Layers

Dressing in layers is the golden rule of Smoky Mountain winters. You'll want to be able to easily adjust your clothing as the temperature fluctuates throughout the day.

  • Base Layer: Moisture-wicking thermals (avoid cotton).
  • Mid Layer: A warm fleece or wool sweater to insulate.
  • Outer Shell: A windproof and waterproof winter jacket.

2. Warm, Waterproof Footwear

Whether you are stepping out of the car for a photo or hiking to Abrams Falls, keeping your feet warm and dry is essential.

  • Boots: Insulated, waterproof hiking boots with good tread for icy spots.
  • Socks: Thick wool or synthetic hiking socks (pack an extra pair in your daypack just in case!).

3. Cold Weather Accessories

Don't lose body heat from exposed skin. The wind in the open valley can have a sharp bite to it during January and February.

  • A warm beanie or insulated toboggan.
  • Water-resistant gloves or mittens.
  • A scarf or neck gaiter to block the wind.

4. Vehicle & Safety Gear

Because Cades Cove is a remote area of the national park, it pays to keep a few emergency supplies in your trunk when navigating winter roads.

  • An ice scraper and snow brush.
  • A warm emergency blanket.
  • A flashlight with extra batteries.
  • Bottled water and non-perishable snacks.

5. Wildlife Viewing Gear

Winter is actually a fantastic time to spot wildlife in the Cove because the trees have lost their leaves, making visibility much higher!

  • Binoculars: A must-have for spotting distant animals safely.
  • Camera: Bring your DSLR or smartphone, but keep it warm inside your coat. (Cold weather drains batteries fast, so pack extras!)

6. Skincare & Protection

The cold mountain air can quickly dry out your skin, and the winter sun is surprisingly strong when reflecting off the frost or snow.

  • Moisturizing lip balm (SPF preferred).
  • Hand lotion or heavy moisturizer.
  • Sunglasses to cut the glare from snow and frost.

❄️ Local Winter Travel Tip

Road closures are common in the higher elevations of the park during the winter. Always double-check road statuses via the National Park Service or stop by the visitor center before making the drive to the Cades Cove Loop!
